iPad Pro and connection of external HD via Magic Keyboard

I have the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. When connecting an external drive into the USB C port of the keyboard I get no recognition in ‘Files’ and also cannot see any power being drawn by the external device. External HD is formatted correctly and can be read by my MacBook. Any pointers gratefully received as to what the issue is.

The USB-C port within the spine of the Magic Keyboard for iPad can only be used to connect a Power Adapter. This port does not support connection of any other devices.

If you wish to connect external storage, or other supported USB devices to your iPad, you must connect them via your iPad’s USB-C port. Multiple devices can be simultaneously connected using a suitable USB-C hub.
