Swollen battery repair

Sometimes, when i have m MacBook Pro on my lap it gets really hot

If I remember to keep a buffer between me and the battery it will not happen for weeks

After it is really hot and won't charge I can wait a few days and it will boot up

or

I put it in the Freezer for 30 minutes and it takes care of the issue. I don't think it's just a hot battery but an expanded battery. The mouse pade wont even click as it is swollen Thanks

Hi jimicocobop,

Since the battery inside your Mac is swollen, we recommend that you stop using it and check out the link below and read the section titled "Get service for your battery."

Get help with your Mac laptop battery

Your Apple One Year Limited Warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. If you purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan for your Mac laptop and your battery retains less than 80 percent of its original capacity, Apple will replace the battery at no charge. If you don't have coverage, you can have the battery replaced for a fee.

MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro computers with built-in batteries should have their batteries replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store, or by an Independent Repair Provider that uses genuine Apple parts.1 Repairs performed by untrained individuals or using non-genuine Apple parts could damage your equipment, and such damage is not covered by warranty. Genuine Apple parts are also available for out-of-warranty repairs through Self Service Repair.2

Some older Mac laptops have removable batteries that you can replace yourself. Contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store for help servicing a removable battery.

The reason why we are recommending that you get service for your battery is because the battery inside your Mac is swollen.

Before you pursue service, take a look at the link below.

Get your Mac ready for service

1. Make a backup
Back up your Mac, in case it becomes necessary to erase or replace its disk during service.

2. Arrange for service
Arrange for service. Depending on availability in your area, you can make a reservation at an Apple Store, find an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or set up mail-in service.

3. Check your settings
To help ensure that the service technician can perform any necessary diagnostic testing, complete these steps. If you can't, the technician might need to discuss options with you.
* If you turned on Find My Mac, turn off Find My.
* If you turned on a firmware password, turn off the firmware password.
* If you arranged for mail-in service, follow any additional instructions you receive from Apple.
If you're concerned about the security of your data during service, either turn on FileVault or remove your data, such as by erasing all content and settings.

4. Gather your information
If you're carrying your Mac to a service location:
* Bring the sales receipt with you, if you have it. You might also need your Apple ID password and a form of personal identification, such as a driver license, passport, or other government-issued ID.
* Make sure that you know the name and password of your macOS user account, in case you need to log in to your Mac at the service location.

5. Gather your equipment
If you're carrying your Mac to a service location, also bring its power cable and any accessories that you need help with.

If you arranged for mail-in service, follow the packaging and mailing instructions you received.

Hi jimicocobop,

To manage the temperature on a Mac, we encourage for you to follow the tips we previously provided. Based on the information we've gathered, it's our recommendation to have your Mac serviced for replacing the battery.

You can also visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your region, you can visit this link here to review a list of locations near you: Find Locations - Apple

Kind regards.

Hi jimicocobop,

You are welcome. We don't recommend placing the Mac in the freezer to cool it down, as the temperature in a freezer is out of the range. Also, we wanted to share tips for managing the Mac's temperature.

Tips to manage the operating temperature:
* Make sure that you’ve installed all Mac software updates.
* Use your Mac laptop where the ambient temperature is between 50° and 95° F (10° and 35° C). Don’t leave your Mac laptop in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range. You should also use your Mac laptop where the relative humidity is between 0% and 95% (noncondensing).
* Use your Mac laptop on a stable work surface that allows for good ventilation. Don’t use your Mac laptop in your bed, on a pillow, or under bedding.
* Don’t put anything over the keyboard.
* If your Mac laptop has ventilation openings, don't put anything into them.
* Use only Apple-authorized power adapters.

These tips and more details are found in Keep your Mac laptop within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support.

Reach back out if you have any questions.

Take care!

Thanks

If I put something between me and the computer it won't happen for weeks.

When it does the twenty-minute freezer trick solves the problem.

I own 4 four Mac products and always had good luck

I won't however let Apple do the repair. I took it in and they wanted to do $1100 in cosmetic repair before they would even consider the repair. They said they could not guarantee it. I'm a tech in a different field and I know an upsell when I see one. The cosmetic issues have nothing to do with it

I'll go to an aftermarket place

Thanks again
