File attachments disappear from email

When I receive attached files, I see a box with a download arrow. Once they are downloaded, however, they disappear from view, i.e. a blank screen. They are there, because if I randomly click my cursor over the area where they originally appeared I can find them and open them. But why are they hidden from view once downloaded?
