Picked this up from a good friend. She said she had intermittent problems with low call volume. It works great with speaker on and headphones, but not hand to ear which is veeery low. I’ve installed the latest OS that I thought would solve this as it appears to be a software problem since it works the other to ways as mentioned. I’ve Google this and tried everything. This is ridiculous and I have never experienced anything like this on 5 other iphones. Any ideas?
Earpiece dirty, or obstructed by cover-screen protector-dirt?
Settings>Accessibility>Audio/Visual... check the audio balance? (move it right, move it left)?
If the issue still persists, I suggest that you make an appointment (*) and have your device inspected at an Apple Store or AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) among this list:--> https://locate.apple.com/choose-country-region . After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options.

Well not sure what I did but cleaning the speaker seemed to help and now it works!
