File Not Found / File Can't Be Found error in Ventura

Ever since updating to Ventura, macOS will sporadically tell me that a file "can't be found" when I go to open it. Usually is happens after a file has been copied or moved. Trying to open the file again works as normal, but this problem has caused a lot of software to fail, as they cannot find the settings files that they depend upon to function. Resetting NVRAM or PRAM occasionally works, but is neither a reliable, nor permanent, nor convenient solution.

If there are any solutions out there I would love to hear them, but this seems to be a pretty serious deeper problem with the OS itself and needs to be addressed ASAP

I'm on Ventura 13.3.1 on an M1 Studio Mac - I get this error a lot ! Its like the desktop file is corrupt.

It's messing with FCPX file imports trying to access media/photos/video I have dropped/imported from my camera cards.

Every time, on the second attempt to double click the same file, it opens normally...

We used to just rebuild the desktop file but that command has gone.

A friend has an M2 MacBook told me she also gets the exact same error in 13.3.1 and has not found a fix?

The current stable release of Ventura including bug fixes, security updates is macOS Ventura 13.2.1 - I would start there.

While I do not run into this problem in my everyday work, it is a totally reproducible problem in Ventura 13.2.1. Try these steps:

  1. Select any 2 files
  2. Right click and select "New Folder with Selection"
  3. Change the name of the folder to anything. You must do this step to reproduce the error. It will initially come up with "New Folder with Items", just start typing to change it to anything else.
  4. Now try opening any file in that folder and you will get the File not Found error.

Same issue here. I am on 13.3.1 - No fix yet.

It happens with any file at random times. If I move a file from one area to another and click on it it will not open. If I do it again, it will sometimes open without the error. Or, if I tend to wait a minute after moving the file, it opens without issue.

EDIT: If I take a file and right-click and then click Open, I do not seem to get the error. Only when double clicking the file does it seem to produce the error.

Clearly the file is there as seen in the screenshots.

I’m suffering from this same problem on my M1 MacBook Pro. I’m wondering if you’ve had any success. I do not use spotlight and therefore doubt it will solve my problem.

I often receive the file/app can not be found error message with a file I saved only a few minutes prior and/or an app I’m currently using for other files. This includes software created by major developers such as adobe as well as small developers. This even includes apple software! When trying to open mp3 files with quicktime player the OS said, quicktime player can’t be opened. It claimed quicktime player is from an unidentified developer.

This problem began when I moved from Monterey to Ventura 3.1 and the problem impacts my work hourly, every day. I find this to be such a serious and widespread problem, I expected apple to rush an urgent update to fix it. Yet the problem persist after 3.2 and 3.2.1 and it has me wondering how is everyone else dealing with this and why is apple not fixing it?

I followed your steps and the problem was there exactly as you said it would be. Although I feel confident the problem has happened even when items were not moved. My apps are not being moved yet they often generate errors such as the quicktime message mentioned previously. I don't know if these problems are related but I hope they fix them soon.

I’m using an M1 Mac Studio (base model). I don’t think it’s a hardware issue. It’s definitely operating system related. Strangely I didn’t have any issues yesterday with it, BUT I got a cache memory error in After Effects that I had never had before. Then the error disappeared and there was no issue.

the error came when importing a file from the drive (that I had not previously opened). I believe had I opened or previewed the file I would have gotten the file not found error. I think it translated this to a cache error in AE.

I first discovered this issue as a GPU renderer issue in Premiere Pro when trying to export a file. Then I started getting all of these file not found errors.

note it’s not just media files for me. It’s also documents. That’s what makes it strange.

This particular issue is fixed in Ventura 13.4 and is no longer reproducible.
