Sign into iMessage and FaceTime on laptop

I cannot sign into my FaceTime or iMessage on my laptop. I was signed in until I needed to change my password, no they won't sign back in. I keep getting the message to sign into an old email that I no longer have and haven't for about 5yrs.

Hi irishnfeisty,

We'll be happy to help you out. To sign in, you would need to follow the steps outlined in Sign in to or out of FaceTime on Mac. We see you already checked out the resource titled If you can't sign in to your iMessage account or FaceTime on your Mac. Did you already try the steps in that link? If not, since you mentioned an Apple ID or password as a possible cause, see if this helps:

"Check your Apple ID

To make sure that your Apple ID and password are correct, go to the Apple ID account page and sign in with the same Apple ID that you're using with Messages and FaceTime. If you're able to sign in, open the app and take these steps:

  • Messages: Choose Messages > Settings (or Preferences), then click Sign Out. Sign in again with the same Apple ID you used on the Apple ID account page.
  • FaceTime: Choose FaceTime > Settings (or Preferences), then click Sign Out. Sign in again with the same Apple ID you used on the Apple ID account page."

Let us know if that helps.

Cheers.

Hey there irishnfeisty,

If you use the older email with the current password does it let you sign in? Test to verify. If that doesn’t work, make sure macOS is up to date as this could have an impact on the issue. Here’s how to update macOS:

Before following these steps, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.
1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings or System Preferences.
* If you chose System Settings, click General on the left side of the window. Then click Software Update on the right.
* If you chose System Preferences, click Software Update in the window.
4. Software Update then checks for new software.
* If Software Update finds new software, click the button to install it. The button might be named Update Now, Upgrade Now, Install Now, or Restart Now, for example. You might then be asked to enter your administrator password.
* If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac.

If that still has no impact, test signing in using safe mode. You can read how to enter safe mode here:

Take care.

Hi irishnfeisty,

Since iMessage and FaceTime are built-in apps, it would not be possible to remove them from your MacBook.

Based on the information you've provided, and the steps you've gone through, we would recommend reaching out to Apple Support for additional help at this link here: Contact - Official Apple Support

They would be the best option to take a closer look into the issue from here.

Best regards.

Yes, I researched every option I could find. I believe I exhausted those options before seeking community help.

Neither app allows me to sign out. They both are signed out. I changed my password and went to sign into them on the Mac. They both keep telling me to sign in using an email that I changed about 5yrs ago. Before changing my password a few days ago they both worked fine with my current email. Everything else to do with Apple is signed in with current email and new password. These 2 apps are the only issue.

Thank you for you help.

Not even sure if I'm making sense

Thanks for your help.

I tried your suggestion and it did not work.

Both my phone and laptop are up to date.

Frustrating because I have never had issues linking my phone and laptop together. Does anyone know if I deleted the apps would I be able to re-download them? Would anything like that work anyway?

I'm so confused why its asking for the old email when I haven't had that one for so long and my Apple ID was with the current email.

Thank for the help
