Swipe up to recover

Iphone XS Max stuck at apple logo screen (Black screen with apple logo)

Force hard reset also get the same result as above.

So connect the iphone to itune to do an update. After updating, the phone boot up with the apple logo appearing (black screen) then it goes to white screen with "Swipe up to recover" text on the bottom of the screen.

Anyone can tell me if I do a swipe up, will my phone data be gone? I need help for the answer.

Thank you

Thats what I did for the hard reset and it will reboot to swipe up to recover.

By the way, for your info, I did all using both Mac and Window PC and all same result.

I can't see the phone icon in itune when connected. I also can't find the phone on the PC when connect. The only time when you can see the phone icon in itune is when the iphone is hard reset to recovery mode. See below picture.

When you click on the phone logo, it will goes to the recovery mode asking to update or restore.

I have tried using both Mac and Window PC and update to IOS 16.3.1

After updating it will reboot and Apple logo appear and then goes to white screen with the wording swipe up to recover.

Does IOS version matters. Will different IOS version helps?

I don't have any backup for the phone.

Also, if I do the swipe up to recover after doing the updates via Itunes to IOS 16.3.1,

will my data gone?

Hi tempertontemperton,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your iPhone and you're now seeing an alert that says swipe up to recover. We'd like to help you with this.

From what you've described, it's likely that you will need to restore your iPhone. We now you're concerned about data loss and we understand you are hoping that doesn't happen. Do you currently have a backup of your data in iCloud or on a computer? If you do have a backup, or have synced some information with iCloud, you should be able to recover that data after your restore.

Before you restore your iPhone, you can try these steps to see if it helps:

If your iPhone turns on but gets stuck during start up
If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, try these steps:
1. Connect your iPhone to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.
2. Select your iPhone on your computer.
3. While your iPhone is connected, follow these steps:
* On your iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation): Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then press and hold the side button.

* On your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the side button and volume down button at the same time.

* On your iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Press and hold both the Home button and the side button or the top button at the same time.
4. Keep holding the buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.

5. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update.
A Finder window showing a prompt with the choice to update or restore your iPhone. Update is selected.
6. Your computer will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode. Repeat steps 2-4.

Hi tempertontemperton,

To clarify, if the forced restart while not connected to a computer doesn't resolve the issue you'll need to attempt to force update or restore with the computer.

Without a backup you can't restore data after the process is complete. However, if you ever synced any information you iCloud you may be able to sync that information back once the restore is complete.

In the future you'll want to be sure you're creating a backup of your information to iCloud or your computer. The steps here can assist: Backup methods for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Hi

Okay

Can I know if update to different IOS version will have different result. Say I try to update to IOS 16.4.0

Currently i connect to itune and update the iphone to IOS 16.3.1 and the iphone boot up to white screen with swipe up to recover text.

Secondly if I try to do a swpe up on the phone to do a swipe up to recover, will the data be lost if the iphone successful boot up to the normal iphone screen?

Thank you

Hi tempertontemperton,

We'll be happy to answer these questions for you.

It's unlikely that you'll be able to update your iOS at this point before resolving the issue. The issue you're having will not be resolved with just an update. Since previous steps haven't resolved the issue, a restore of your iPhone is the best next step.

We know how important it is to try to keep your data. With no backup saved, data loss will occur. However, if you have synced data with iCloud in the past, you may be able to recover some of the data. Feel free to go to the iCloud website to see what information you see there, if any. This can give you an idea of what may be restored after you set your iPhone up again.

Hope that answers your questions.

Take care!

Hi

I don't get what you by "before resolving the issue" and "previous steps haven't resolved the issue"

What issue are you referring to and previous steps is which steps?

Normal sequence the iphone is updated to the latest IOS version and boot up to normal screeen

When connecting the iphone to the PC with the Itune program on. From there, you click update on the itune and the itune will download the latest IOS. Then it will try to update the iphone (here you will be seeing the iphone black screen with the apple logo and a straight line below the apple logo). After updating the iphone with the latest IOS version, the iphone will boot up to the normal screen. Just that right now, my iphone xs max after updating the IOS to 16.3.1, it can't boot up to the normal screen

Kindly correct me if the above sequence is wrong.

Below is a sample of how the flow

I really have no idea whether asking for answer here could be the right path. As i have tried to ask before but seem nobody can give me correct answer or rather someone is very expert in iphone.

Yes, there is a difference in updating IOS version.

updating IOS 16.3.1 - iphone boot up to white screen with swipe up to recover text below

updating IOS 16.4.1 - iphone boot up normally just like a new iphone (think should be like factory reset). Unfortunately, all the datas are gone. Now trying to see how to recovery those data.

This is the 2nd time the phone got Freeze so i got to plug in Itunes to do update.

The very first time (can't remember when, probably 1 year ago in year 2021 or 2022, the phone had the same problem-screen freeze) after doing itune updating solve the problem.

So will there be a difference if I will to do a swipe up and key in the password and the phone is back to normal with no loss of data?

Swipe up to recover
