Hey IgsterBunny,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

The documents are mostly likely in iCloud Drive. After signing in the iCloud, do you haver a folder labeled Drive? If so, you should be able to access your documents there.

For more information about accessing your files in iCloud Drive, review this article: Access and manage your files in iCloud Drive.

Take care.

When iCloud storage is full you have to manage iCloud storage so that sufficient space is created Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support or you can downgrade the storage plan Downgrade or cancel your iCloud+ plan - Apple Support

The documents that were not purging with iCloud will sync when you had always turned on iCloud drive box and desktops and documents box Use iCloud Drive to store documents on your Mac and iOS devices - Apple Support also you can optimise storage Optimise storage space on your Mac – Apple Support
