Setting up Dual imac Screens

I have a 2013 imac running on OS X Ver 10.9.5 that I wanted to use as a dual screen and a 2020 macOS Big Sur Ver 11.7.4 that will be my primary screen. The command + F2 or FN + F2 does not toggle to see both displays, only the brightness on the standard F2 command button. I also can't see the "arrangement" tab under the display. How do I setup dual screens for these 2 imacs? I'm using a apple thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, with a thunderbolt 2 cable.

Hi there!

Unfortunately, you cannot use Target Display mode.

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

For Target Display mode to work,

  • The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
  • The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Thunderbolt  or Thunderbolt 2  cable.

The 2020 iMac is too new.

As an alternative, you could use Luna Display, a third-party option. You'll need upgrade your 2013 iMac to OS X El Capitan or newer (your Mac supports up to Catalina) for Luna Display.
