MacBook Pro 2017 Screen works during boot then dies and just shows vertical lines

Hi,

I hope I can get some help with this problem that is confounding me. My MacBook Pro 2017 (Dual Core Intel core i5 with Intel Iris plus 640 graphics) screen works during start-up, showing the apple logo and slider. It shows the background screen for Ventura (13.2.1) for a half second, then goes black with some vertical white stripes.

The machine works fine with an external monitor and during the update to Ventura, the MacBook screen showed the login screen for several minutes until I typed in the password.

This tells me that the screen is not damaged, since it is able to show some things. And, if an external monitor can be supported, then my reasoning says that the graphics chip is working. So what is wrong?

I have tried starting in safe mode, resetting all that can be reset etc and it makes no difference.

I have read that some of the heatsinks on the graphic chip can have a poor cement connection to the chip, causing overheating, and even a suggestion somewhere of reflowing the solder using a heat gun. I don't want to do this unless it's a last resort. I do notice that the fan is on much more than I would expect. Not sure if that is normal or some clue.

The screen was replaced just over two years ago due to a bad connection cable, but there is no sign of this being a problem now. The screen does not change when using different angles etc. I don't think the machine has been dropped either, or had liquid damage.

Can anybody help tell me what is wrong, and if there is anything I can do to save me the most likely high costs of an apple repair.

Thanks.

SimonC

If an external monitor plugged in works trouble free It would rule out GPU,

and implicate the Display Assembly. Vertical artifacts are almost always a problem with the display itself.

Either way it is a hardware issue.

Your display is 'flaky'. Works sometimes, fails at other times.

as leroydouglas suggested, connect to a TV set or other display to make sure the processor and Graphics processor are ok, and the trouble is limited to the display.

Or make an appointment and take it to Apple for a free over-the counter diagnosis and FIRM quote for fixing.

Apple-Authorized Service Providers can also provide such an analysis, but they are free to charge an 'evaluation fee', intended to discourage you from using their expensive technician time for frivolous research. If Apple or you pay for a repair, you can ask for a rebate of the evaluation fee.
