How to rename a file that's open in Preview?

Since updating to Monterey (possibly Big Sur), Preview does not rename an open file like it use to.

Old way, all prior OSes:

Type the new file name in the document menu bar, hit return. Done!

Now:

Type the new file name in menu bar, then tab to TAGS field, then hit return.

Unless I tab to the tags field, the new name doesn't stick. I have not found Apple guidance on this, so is this just my machine, or is it a change in the application or OS?

If it's an anomaly on this machine, how to fix it?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

Have you created a keyboard shortcut for Preview?

This is spiralling down...

1) Added keyboard shortcut via Keyboard prefs, for File>Rename...

File open in Preview, use shortcut... ---- BEEP!

2) In use elsewhere? dl'd ShortcutDetective to search, as the focus window, enter desired key combo -- BEEP BEEP etc., not responding, then crash

3) Found Apple's Shortcuts app. Screen after screen of pretty, but nothing useful.

Open 'Add shortcut' window to search the "Apps" tab. Preview is not there.

Thus my q.

Meanwhile, I'll TAB to the tags field, remembering to thank Apple... 🤨

SOLUTION?

In Keyboard prefs > Shortcuts>App Shortcuts, Preview is listed under all applications. The shortcut does work if entered without "File>"

That is the normal way to enter the menu text - in this case, it is just "Rename" (without quotes).

Only in submenus one should in some cases add the "path" - for example,

you can write "Revert To->Browse All Versions..."

or just "Browse All Versions..." (without quotes, in each case) and they both would work.

I only use the longer version when there is some ambiguity.

Indeed.

FWIW, the "old way" does not work in Monterey.

No idea what you mean about your new screen name. I have nothing to do with screen names. 😎

Yes, I mis-read the instructions at Create keyboard shortcuts for apps on Mac - Apple Support

tnx!
