ExFAT 4tb Toshiba hdd only works on old Macs

I’m trying to connect a client’s 4tb Toshiba hdd to the M1 I’ll be working on but when I plugged it the hdd light stays put and it doesn’t get recognized. It only seems to work on old macs, any idea why is this happening and how to fix it without formatting the whole hdd? (It’s got 3.5 tb outta 4) thanks!

Hey there Godechin,

We'd like to rule out some possible causes, along with confirming more details to better learn about what's happening:

  1. When was the last time the external storage device worked with the same Mac?
  2. Are other accessories working without any issues while connected to the same port on your Mac?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  4. Since you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.2.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!
