Morning alarm randomly doesn’t work.

I first had this issue in my iPhone SE (2020) where my morning alarm randomly doesn’t go off. At first I thought I did something wrong in my confused haze after waking up, but after missing, among other things, a university exam that made me fail my year - I tried to investigate the problem. After finding no fixes I assumed there was something wrong with the phone itself.

Now I’ve encountered the same issue on a brand new IPhone 14 (missing university classes again).

Firstly - I use the sleep schedule with the built in alarm (although it seems this happens with the normal alarms as well). In the sleep schedule settings there is a tab for “Alarm Settings”. Below is a screenshot of those settings.

As you can see, all of the appropriate settings to produce an alarm is active.

I have seen this problem on countless forums - to which the official response is always related to settings. I can assure you this makes no difference. Below is a screenshot of the “Sound and Haptics” settings of my phone.

As you can see the “Change with Buttons” setting is disabled - so my media volume should have no impact on the alarm sound.

Since I have experienced this problem so much I can also say the following:

  • iOS version does not make a difference
  • Wearing an Apple Watch does not make a difference
  • Having the on silent/not silent does not make a difference
  • Restarting the phone does not make a difference

Reproducing the error is difficult, because if I set an alarm or change the sleep schedule to go off in 1 minute from now, it always works. The error only happens in the mornings.

Below is a screenshot of my sleep tracker for last night. I admit this is a bad example, because I didn’t get much sleep, but my alarm is set to go off at 05:10 and you will see I’m still asleep until after 06:00.

When I eventually wake up I look at

my phone and see the screen you would normally see when the alarm goes off. It gives you the options “Snooze” or “Stop” the alarm, even though there are no vibrations from my Watch, nor are there any alarm sounds playing.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this, because I really don’t want to miss an exam or other important event again.

Thanks for reaching out tiaanb,

It looks like you've explored a number of settings and possibilities that might be the cause of your alarm not working as expected. We can help.

Since you've ruled out a lot, our recommendation from here is to Contact Apple for support and service and report the behavior.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
