Since Ventura upgrade the hostname keeps colliding between wired and wifi to renames

Since upgrading to Ventura I find it regulary renames the hostname because of a collision with itself (1), (2), (3), (4), (5) etc. It will rename itself multiple times per day. There is nothing else on the home network other than my phone. This was never an issue on prior versions of the OS which used to handle dual homed devices perfectly fine for the 15 years I have had various Macs.

This has knock on effects for bluetooth devices that seem to not like that the host name has changed, so have to forget and re-register.

Separately since upgrading to Ventura, I also have a dual monitor setup and since Ventura it can never remember the monitor positioning relative to each other so after coming out of sleep or restarting it randomly picks the ordering of the screens, meaning pretty much every day I need to go into settings --> display settings and position the screens. Ventura does feel like its quite buggy in this respect.

Good day to you giles260,

Could you please clarify for us which device is changing names? Your Mac or your Bluetooth device(s)? You also mentioned that there as a collision happening between two devices. Could you tell us more about which one has run into the other and if there seems to be any physical damage from that collision?

We’d like to have you check if “Use dynamic global hostname” is enabled on your Mac - Change your computer’s name or local hostname on Mac

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Sharing on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click Edit in the “Local hostname” section at the bottom of the window, then enter a new local hostname.
3. If needed, turn on the “Use dynamic global hostname” option. Use a dynamic global hostname on Mac

Thanks.

Hi Annie,

It's my MacBook Pro 14 inch that keeps changing its hostname. It detects a hostname collision on the network when both Wifi and wired ethernet are enabled at the same time. This did not used to happen on the MacOS prior to Ventura when I would often have both Wifi and wired enabled (normally as I forgot to disable Wifi when I was plugged in).

There is no physical damage. Rather the Mac decides to start incrementing its name. This then has knock on effects with register bluetooth devices like Bose headphones that then refuse to pair until I forget them in the Mac and re-register the pairing.

I've enabled the dynamic global hostname option. Was this previously enabled by default? As I mentioned I have only seen this problem since upgrading to Ventura.

Thanks for you help.
