can i delete ios files on my mac without any harm

I currently have about 40 gb's of iOS files from my iPhone backed up on my mac book. I plugged my iPhone into my mac about a month ago to charge it and I guess it automatically made a backup. I don't use iTunes or my laptop to backup but I did recently update my iPhone. I regularly use iCloud to backup my phone. If I delete these iOS files off my mac will it harm anything on my iPhone at all? I am mainly worried about losing my photos on my iPhone. I don't necessarily care if my photos are stored on my mac though, only need them on my phone.
