Why is my iPhone saying I have no storage to update?

i need to update my phone and it’s saying i have no storage but i don’t understand how when i pay $2.99 a month for storage? i need help?

The monthly amount you pay will be for iCloud storage, which can be used for data in the cloud and device backups. If your device is short of space to do an upgrade then you may need to temporarily remove some of the apps or data that is currently on it. See If your iPhone or iPad won't update - Apple Support and/or How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support. Offloading unused apps may be a quick way to free up some space.
