Dual eSim With iMessages

I've read a couple articles about using dual eSims to support 2 phone numbers on one device, but I'm still confused about something so hopefully someone here can help.

I have a work phone supplied by my employer which has an unlimited call, text and data plan. I'm coming up on the end of my contract for my personal phone, and since I would prefer not to carry 2 phones, I am considering getting a new plan and simply adding it to my work phone's second eSim. Simple enough so far...

What I'm wondering is, since I have unlimited data on my work plan, can I get away with a low cost voice and text only plan for my personal line on the second eSim, while still be able to use features such as iMessages or other data related services using my work eSim.

I get that if I am making phone calls or doing simple SMS type texting from my personal eSim, there's no problem. Question is,if I am using the personal sim for texting or calls, can the work sim be active for data at the same time to support data type features of the phone. If I am texting, and not in coverage of WIFI, can iMessages use my work sim data even if the texts are tied to my personal phone number? I assume if this is possible, iMessages would need to be associated with an AppleID login, as opposed to a device phone number.

Thanks for any help.

Just to word the above a little differently, work sim would have call, texts and data on, the personal sim would have call and simple text capabilities on and have cellular data turned off. If logged in with an AppleID and texting as my personal phone number, can the phone use my work sim data for services like iMessages that require WIFI or data bandwidth?
