Why while sleeping today overnight with Apple Watch on its charger, in the morning when I put it on,screen had this message that I got my password wrong too many times - had to reset and repair to regain access
but how / why did this happen?

Whatever temporary glitch happened will have been cleared by the unpair and setup.
It is possible to fumble the watch in the dark or while cleaning but it does not sound like that happened.
Any chance the kids came in during the night and had a go at turning it on?
Thank you! But… Definitely the wrongly tried passwds as many as 8, would have been wireless via Bluetooth or on the charger power line
