can't reset 5th gen ipad, won't accept password; original owner

When attempting to reset my 5th gen ipad, I came to a stage in the process where it asked for my previous password, but it will not accept it. I've entered it repeatedly, and now I'm at a stage where it makes itself unavailable for increasingly long periods of time, each time I make the attempt. I'm the original owner. I haven't used it in a couple of years. After I turned it on, I tried to sync it with my mac that it had previously synced with, but it would not trust the mac, so I decided to reset it.

Hi Caoim,

Our apologies for the confusion. This sounds like it might be the passcode that you enter to unlock your iPad.

You can't reset this lost passcode, you need to put this iPad into recovery mode and restore the iPad using a Mac or PC to erase the iPad:

If you forgot your iPad passcode

That should help you get back to using this iPad.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Thanks, but I don't have an issue with my password, and I haven't forgotten it. I was in the process of resetting my ipad, when I came to a step where it asked my for previous password, but it will not accept it, and each time I enter the password, it rejects it and locks me out for longer and longer periods of time.
