iMovie 10 subtitles?

The method for iM10 is described here and on the youtube.

Lower third titles and lots of c&p and/or typing. Same for FCPX.

However, Handbrake will do a lovely job with an .srt file and your iM10 (or FCPX) "shared" video.

Load your video clip into HB.

Click on Subtitles tab.

Tracks pop up on left. Add ext subtitle track. Navigate to .srt to select.

(MacWhisper is one app that will speech to text to .srt)

Burned in check box. Language. UTF-8 encoding.

these snaps should provide the method.

Extracting/making a .srt file is another thing entirely.

There are on-line sellers of the transcribe to .srt service (MacWhisper is one app that will speech to text to .srt).

Some do translation as well.

This is all post picture edit. IE: as we say, Locked.

The timing depends on the lock. So the .srt extract has to be from a locked picture edit.

As you can see in the bottom snap, the .srt file includes "time code".

HB reads the time code and does the rest. It doesn't take any additional time, near as I can tell.

Navigate to .srt/subtitle track.

Check burned in box and UTF-8 encode.

It probably can be done with Subler as well. But timing may not be as automatic.

If necessary, if timing is off, both apps can create offsets, a rpita.

I have done it with foreign films that arrive without subs and Subler.

Thanks for posting that. I had seen the subtitles button in handbrake but never took the time to see how it worked.

Could you provide more detail re the procedure for creating and inserting subtitles using Handbrake? I wasn't quite able to figure it out. I take it that one creates a subtitle in an .SRT file, and then drags the file into the track pane? How does the subtitle get inserted into the proper place in the movie? Some screen shots might help.
