Image Capture Alternative

Image Capture has been less and less reliable over the years, but it's to the point now that it's fully broken on Monterey (12.3.1) It crashes part way through transfer every time, if it even allows me access to my phone at all (even after clicking "Trust", entering password, etc.), or if it actually succeeds in transferring it does not delete the photos of my phone. I have spent hours troubleshooting it with no success. This should be a SIMPLE procedure and I don't understand why it's so difficult: All I want to do is transfer photos from my iPhone to a folder on my computer (converted from HEIC), and have those photos delete off my iPhone. That used to be possible, but I can't seem to find any other way to do such a simple task. I will not be using iPhoto/Photos.

It's been getting progressively buggier for the last 6 years, so something tells me that won't be the case...

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
