Video not importing even though import selected appear but then the footage is nowhere to be found

Everything was going smoothly this morning but then suddenly, FCP stopped importing my videos (even though I have full space on my Mac M1 with macOS Monterey). My process is to select from my SD card and then dropping the footage selected in my video folder and then dropping the footage in my keyword selection, so everything is well ordered. But the last videos that I imported (because I don't have an error message. After I click, IMPORT SELECTED, footage just don't appear) are nowhere to be found. I am quite new to FCP. I have just installed the app 3 days ago (after having used for 2 months the trial version where I didn't encounter any problems). THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

Is the media inside or outside the library?

Before even considering starting over (which of course would be something to try to avoid), it is worth experimenting in a new library, just to know if it would make any difference. Specifically: does importing to a new library even work now?

The answer will help us determine if the problem is with this one specific library or is something else.

Also: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

This will help us look for possible issues, like third party bad actors who could be affecting FCP.

The files go wherever you assign. The default is into the library bundle. In library properties you can change the storage location to anywhere that you like, an assigned drive or a folder on the drive. FCP will put the media there in a folder called Final Cut Original Media. There will be similar folders for Final Cut Optimized Media, Final Cut Proxy Media, and Final Cut High Quality I think it says for render files, if you need to generate those. The folder structure is based on the event structure you have in the library. It’s really a good way to work with the media as it reflects the library structure, while still making the content accessible to other users and applications.

HELP! This is driving me crazy. I even called the Apple Support, shared my screen and the guy was really nice but could not find a solution except to create a new project, a new library and start over. I have been working on this for a few weeks but the project is very light (124,7MB) and there are not much footage in it. So it is not an "almost full disk problem". I have been watching every YouTube video tutorials to fix the issue but nothing is working and I am getting very frustrated. I had arrange everything by keyword and I don't want to start over again. I want to know what the issue is. Because If I encountered the problem again, at least I won't have to start over again for the third time and I will know what to do. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hey thank you, I absolutely did not know that the files would work much better if I import them from the card directly. That is good to know. I just followed the instructions of a tutorial found on YouTube where it was supposedly the best way to do it.

My media are just in my video folder. I have the option "Leave files in place" turned on. Doesn't it mean that this way FCP won't create a copy of my footage in a second library? That is the reason I did it as it was explained to me that this way your footage wasn't doubled by FCP and didn't take as much space. But seriously I am very new to this. So I might totally be wrong 😂

It is very easy to determine where files will end up.

Just select the location for your library. As you probably know, you can set the media location to be "in library" or you can choose a designated folder to store the media. In this case, you want the latter.

What I'd do in similar circumstances is to use an "import library" to import the media and store it in a desired location; then I can close this auxiliar library, or delete it altogether, and import normally to the working library using Leave in Place.

As Tom said, FCP will work much better with these files rewrapped as mov (which is what happens if you import them from the card directly).
