What can I NOT do on an Apple Watch that is stand-alone

If I buy an Apple watch, what can I NOT do if the watch is used stand-alone, without wifi (iphone not nearby) or cellular service?

I have NO interest in paying for additional cellular service, as I now use Consumer Cellular for my iPhone and will keep that plan. (Not supported for the watch per the list I read).

I realize that I would have to upgrade my iPhone from original SE. At least to start using the watch.

Hi netmouser,

Got it! We can point you in the right direction for help with that. Using the link that was attached above, you can find the following list about what is available when your iPhone is connected to Wi-FI. This list will show what you will not be able to do when not connected to a network:

If your Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi
When your Apple Watch is connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can still do the following (even if your iPhone is turned off):
* Get apps from the App Store
* Send messages
* Make phone calls (make phone calls if you have Wi-Fi calling enabled or want to make a FaceTime audio call and you’re within range of a Wi-Fi network)
* Use Walkie-Talkie
* Stream musicpodcasts, and audiobooks to your Apple Watch
* Add music
* Check current weather conditions
* Track your stocks
* Control your home
* Use third-party apps that support Wi-Fi connectivity

This information can be found here: Use Apple Watch without its paired iPhone - Apple Support

Hope that provides you with the information you're looking for. If not, let us know if there is a specific feature you're concerned about and we can try to address it that way.

Cheers!

Thanks for reaching out netmouser,

It sounds like you are looking to purchase a GPS only Apple Watch, and you want to know what limitations to expect by not having cellular service attached to the device. We can help.

Check out this article to Use Apple Watch without its paired iPhone:

With Apple Watch with cellular and an activated cellular plan, you can stay connected even when away from your iPhone. For all other models of Apple Watch, there are still things you can do even when you are away from your iPhone and not connected to Wi-Fi.

* Play music
* Play podcasts
* Play audiobooks
* Record and play voice memos
* Use transit cards and use your student ID card
* Find peoplefind devices, and find items
* Use the watch, world clockalarmstimers, and the stopwatch
* Display photos from synced photo albums
* Make store purchases with Apple Pay
* See calendar events
* Track your activity and workout
* Check your heart rateedit your sleep schedulemeasure your blood oxygen levelstrack menstrual cycles, and relax and breathe mindfully
* Measure sound levels around you and from your headphones

Apple Watch has a built-in GPS that allows you to get more accurate distance and speed information during an outdoor workout without your paired iPhone. Apple Watch also has a built-in barometric altimeter to get more accurate elevation gain/descent information. The always-on altimeter in Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6, and later is even more accurate, showing your current elevation in real time.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
