But….on my phone, 2 seperate icons and interfaces. The absence of an icon on Carplay for Classical seems to be a glaring oversight.

Nope. I can’t interact with Apple Classical directly in CarPlay. If I’m connected I can open the Classical app on my phone and get the music to play through CarPlay but the app itself doesn’t show up on my car’s screen the way other CarPlay enabled apps do.

Not the same thing. The Apple Classical app is tailored to classical music, with some items labeled “exclusive”, and many classical playlists without the clutter from other genres.

The “Now playing” app will show whatever I choose from Apple Classical Music on my iPhone, however

Correct. You cannot interact through apple classical, only through music (at least right now). The classical is just layered on top of Apple Music. So, search whatever you would like in classical, make a playlist, control the playlists through car play.

You can play Apple classical selections on CarPlay if you first download them into your classical library. Then they show up in Apple Music but without the more detailed indexing from Apple classical. It is easiest to use CarPlay if you create and download a classical playlist. You can then use CarPlay for Apple Music and select the downloaded classical playlist.
