Hey Retiredfa,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. The information below may help with the HBO Max app not working on the Apple TV.

If you're experiencing an issue with opening the HBO Max app, we first recommend restarting the Apple TV. Restarting refreshes the system software and may resolve the issue. For steps on restarting your Apple TV, follow the steps below:

* With your Siri Remote (2nd generation or later) or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later)*: Hold down the Back  and TV/Control Center  buttons. Let go when the light on your device flashes.
* With your Siri Remote (1st generation) or Apple TV Remote (1st generation)*: Hold down the Menu and TV/Control Center  buttons. Let go when the light on your device flashes.
* With your Apple Remote (aluminum or white): Hold down the Menu and Down buttons. Let go when the light on your device flashes.

You can access the steps here as well: How to turn off or restart your Apple TV.

If you continue to experience the issue, remove the HBO max app and then reinstall. To remove the app, follow the steps below or in this article: Customize the Apple TV Home Screen.

1. Select the app you want to delete, then press and hold the clickpad center (Siri Remote 2nd generation or later) or touch surface (Siri Remote 1st generation) until the app starts to jiggle.
2. Press the Play/Pause button  for more options, then choose Delete.
3. Deleting an app also deletes its data. You can download any app again that you’ve purchased on the App Store, free of charge, but the data may not be restored.

Deleting the app, will delete all of its data, however you may need to download your free or purchased data.

To download the app, follow these steps below.

* In the App Store  on Apple TV, navigate to Buy or Get (for a free app), then press the clickpad center (Siri Remote 2nd generation or later) or the touch surface (Siri Remote 1st generation) to begin downloading.
* If you see Install (with the iCloud icon), you’ve already purchased the app and you can download it again for free. If you see Open, the app is already installed; select Open to launch the app.

For future reference, you can also see the steps in this article: Purchase and download apps on Apple TV.

If you're experiencing a different issue with the app, provide us more details.

Take care.
