add contact to messages

How do I add a contact to my mac messaging app? I have one contact from my phone from long ago, but I don't remember how I added this contact. What do I have to do to add another person?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 12.6

Hi there Trevoc,

To add a new contact in Messages on your Mac, follow these steps from Create and manage contacts in Messages on Mac:

Create a new contact
You can create a contact card for the person you’re texting, if they’re not already in your Contacts.
1. In the Messages app  on your Mac, select a conversation.
2. Choose Conversations > Add to Contacts.
3. If you see Show Contact Card instead of Add to Contacts, you already have a card for that person.
4. You may not be able to add contacts if you’re restricted by communication limits in Screen Time.
5. Fill in the fields in the contact card. Be sure to enter any instant message accounts you want to be able to use to send the person messages.

To send the new contact a message, type their name in the To field of the Messages window, or click the Add button  next to the To field and choose them from the list.

That article also shows how to manage contacts that you previously added as well.

If you are trying to accomplish something else, please provide more details so that we can continue to assist.

Cheers!

Thank you for your reply!

After many attempts before you replied, I found out that the person to be added has to be on an Apple device such as iPhone or iPad. I wish the help files said that to start with instead of omitting this important fact. It's a pain in the neck to have to do research just because Apple Help files ignore the fact that people don't always know that to add a person, the person to be added needs to be an Apple owner.

Maybe you can put some input to developers and suggest that part to be added.

Thanks again for your help!
