The oldest Power Mac G5 - released in 2003 - can run OS 10.2.7 Lion up to OS 10.5.8 Leopard.

The newest Power Mac G5 - released in 2005 - can run OS 10.4.2 Tiger thru OS 10.5.8 Leopard.

There were several other year models released between the two.

It will be important to know exactly which Power Mac you have to give you the best assist and info.

If the Mac does not start, you should find the serial number, probably on the back panel, and enter it on this Apple Serial Number lookup page to determine what model that is.

Regardless of the OS required, this task will be a chore.

The computer will have shipped with a set of Mac OS reinstall DVDs. It would be best, if you received those with this Mac, that you use them to get started. The process is usually to insert the DVD into the drive and then reboot the Mac while holding down the C-key on the keyboard.

If you don't have the reinstall discs, then the process becomes much more complex and challenging as you'll need to find the appropriate OS to download and somehow create a bootable drive or installer. That will probably require access to another old Mac of the same vintage to accomplish.
