MacBook Pro kernel panic when running heavy applications

Hi,

Recently my 2016 MacBook Pro started restarting due to kernel panic every time I use heavy applications. Those panics happen when I try to export dozens of images in Adobe Lightroom (which is heavy on CPU) or when I try to use rendering and AI image enhancement programs.

I read many articles, run Apple Diagnostics which didn't report any faults, I reinstalled my MacOS, but the problem remained.

Couple of crash logs I got:

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

All three Kernel Panic reports show the last loaded extension being due to accessing some file system which suggests a connected drive. Two of those panics are actually referencing a CD/DVD.

To get a better idea of the system setup as well as other possible clues, run EtreCheck and post the report here.

Make sure to disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

Start by uninstalling CleanMyMac and MalwareBytes by following the developers' instructions. With MalwareBytes you can find the "uninstall" option on the Help menu within the MalwareBytes app, IIRC, I'm not sure about how to access the CMM uninstaller. CMM is notorious on these forums for causing all sorts of problems on macOS as it interferes with the normal operation of macOS as does MalwareBytes. If you ever suspect your system has been infected with Malware or Adware, then it is Ok to run MalwareBytes to scan the system, but there is absolutely no reason to keep MalwareBytes running its real time scanner as this will also interfere with macOS.

FYI, VPNs do not provide the security you think they will unless you are connecting directly to your own, your employer's, or a bank or other institutions dedicated firewall VPN. The only other reason to use a VPN is to bypass local network or Internet restrictions, or to appear to be from another region. Security is only as good as the VPN exit point.

If you still have issues after uninstalling CMM & MalwareBytes, then run EtreCheck again and post the new report so we can be sure these apps have been completely uninstalled and to look at other possible issues.

There is no reason to use any anti-virus software, cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software on a Mac since macOS already provides great built-in security especially when combined with the user practicing safe computing habits as outlined in this excellent article written by a respected forum contributor:

You have disabled Apple security software updates:

Security:

Gatekeeper: App Store and identified developers

  System Integrity Protection: Enabled

  Security Updates: Disabled

  Antivirus software: None!

You have vestiges of Avast still present:

Launch Daemons:

[...]

[Not Loaded] com.avast.hub.schedule.plist (Not signed - installed )

[Not Loaded] com.avast.hub.xpc.plist (Not signed - installed )

you have leftover debris still present:

Clean up:

  /Library/LaunchAgents/com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist

    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/PDApp/UWA/UpdaterStartupUtility

    Executable not found

  /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.expressvpn.expressvpnd.plist

    /Applications/ExpressVPN.app/Contents/MacOS/expressvpnd

    Executable not found

you are running a VPN you installed yourself. This is likely to be interfering with proper operation of your Mac. this snake-oil does NOT improve security in the slightest, and makes your Mac unstable and crashes more often:

  VPNs:

    OpenVPNTunnel - /Applications/NordVPN.app

    NordLynx - /Applications/NordVPN IKE.app

    tunnelExtension - /Applications/NordVPN IKE.app

    NordLynx - /Applications/NordVPN.app

some of the panics still in your report correlate strongly with the types of errors anti-virus and VPN software provide "to protect you". if you would rather get rid of these ridiculous false alarms, and get some work done, get rid of the false alarm generators.
