Every word 2016 file edited on SMB share becomes corrupt. "Word found Unreadable Content in"

I have one Imac running Ventura and Mac Office 16.71. When saving to an SMB share on an Isilon NAS every word or excel file that is opened and saved on the share becomes corrupted and can no longer be opened. If you edit the file and save it locally on the iMac and drag it to the smb share it can be opened fine. I was however able to open and edit the word doc with textedit and save it and re-open it. Again though as soon as it's modified by Word and saved it is corrupted and can't be read. It actually says it was saved but can't be opened/displayed.

We tried this with a seperate macbook pro and the same SMB share and cannot replicate. The Macbook has the same OS, Ventura and was just updated to the latest 16.71.

It seems like the problem lies with this one iMac, but then there is a wrinkle. When we use a different share on a different NAS the problem iMac does NOT have the same file corruption problems.

We have few Mac systems but this NAS has 10's of thousands of users, so it's hard to implicate the Isilon when only one Imac has a problem. We even logged in with the user to another macbook and they cannot replicate the corruption issues.

Does the NAS SMB share have the word "file" anywhere in the name? i.e. "FileServer", "MyFiles", etc.? There was a nasty bug in Word from many years ago that quite possibly was never fixed.

On the problematic Mac try using this tool that the Microsoft Mac Team developed to fix / repair Office on Macs.

It's basically a bunch of scripts you can execute to Reset individual Office Apps on macOS or completely uninstall Office. https://office-reset.com/
