Make the thumbnails small with the slider. Drag your photo up or down as far as you can, then scroll up or down and repeat until you get the pic located where you want.

The screen does not auto-scroll. You're on a MacBook Pro, so you have a trackpad.
What I do is click on the picture with my thumb, hold my thumb down as I use my index finger to move the picture(s) a bit, and I then also put my middle finger down and do a double finger scroll holding onto the picture with my thumb.
As weird as it is to do, describing is is harder....
