Guides on Apple Maps disappeared after iOS16.4 update

My created guides with saved locations on Apple Maps have disappeared after the update. My Home/Work favorites are still there. I do have maps backing up to icloud turned on. Anyone else have this issue?

If the guides on maps have disappeared after updating to iOS 16.4, there are a few possible explanations:

  1. Location Services: Ensure that Location Services are enabled for the Maps app. To check this, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and ensure that the toggle switch for Maps is turned on.
  2. Network Connectivity: Check your network connectivity. The Guides feature on Maps requires an internet connection to function. Ensure that you have a stable and strong network connection.
  3. Software Update: Check if there is a software update available for your iPhone. If there is, install the latest update as it may contain a fix for this issue.

The workaround for this issue is to save a copy of your guides in your notes. In the event your phone restarts, you can navigate to the notes where your guides are saved and reopen them in the Maps app.

It appears every time you turn the phone off; all guides are deleted upon powering up. From my short tests, saving one copy of your guides seems to be the trick for replacing the missing data once you reopen it.

Hope this helps!

Frankly, this is yet another way computing and the internet has robbed humanity of its achievements. If I had recorded my location based discoveries ON PHYSICAL PAPER maps, I’d have no vulnerabilities of this kind. Backup would have simply been obtained by making multiple sets & each set of data would have been better than the last because of HUMAN LEARNING while transcribing. Isn’t anyone else tired of looking at these COMPUTER SCREENS? We are both the product and the customer, snakes eating our own tails! Do we blame Apple because we put our trust in a computer company or should we instead blame our own laziness for allowing us to do so?

Fixed on iOS16.6 (24/07/2023)

deleted guides are lost forever but new ones will not be removed after restarting your phone.

*Some locations (dropped pins) I had saved in a guide on iOS16.5.1 just before the update have jumped to the nearest building (30metres or so) since updating to 16.6. Yes the guides survived the update. My guides are locations on the ground I reference not buildings.

I have at least 10 guides for different areas of the country, painstakingly created over several years. The guides were there as of July 11th. This morning my iPhone X was updated with a security patch 16.5.1(c) and the guides have disappeared. They were synced to the iCloud and I can still see them on my iPad. How can I best protect that data until a solution is found for the iPhone?

I saved them to Notes from my iPad and then found the following steps, which resolved my issue:

  1. Head over to Settings > your name > iCloud.
  2. Then turn off the toggle next to Maps.
  3. Now wait for a few minutes and re-enable the toggle.
  4. Now launch the Apple Maps app and check if your guides are back or not.

Whew! Now I’ll apply the 16.6 update.

It’s really not that deep bro.. I indeed blame apple for providing a defective product.. there is absolutely nothing lazy about affording the convenience of technology to better our lives in progression to future endeavors.. do you still pull out an atlas to lead you to destinations across the world?

“Would you blame a chef for giving you food poison or would you blame yourself for eating it” would be an equivalence to what you stated above..

I am fighting every update available on my iPhone as I have lost my guides numerous updates. Instead of figuring out the problem, apple makes a new update that wipes out my data. Sick of it.

How is iOS 16.6 working out for you? Myself, and many others who’ve experienced this issue have found that the Guides have remained after this iOS update, and have had no issues since.
