Definitely not MS-DOS, which would be FAT32. File sizes would be limited to 4GB.
Since you'll be using it with FCP, best would be Mac native APFS.
You need to select "Show all devices" from the View popup menu, then erase the device.
Set it for GUID partition Map and APFS if it is an SSD, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if it is a HDD.
