Why is mail app not showing unread messages badge in dock icon when choosing "dock unread count: today" in mail's general preferences? I have received several emails today, which I haven't read. The badge only appears when choosing "all mailboxes" or "inbox only". Using MacOS Monterey 12.6.3 (21G419).

Turn the options off in Mail General tab and the Notification settings for Mail. Then shutdown completely. Boot into Safe Mode by holding Shift on Intel Macs while powering on. On Apple Silicon M1/M2 hold power to reach the Options screen while powering on. Then hold shift and select the Macintosh HD boot drive. It will say Safe Mode. You will have to login twice and booting will take longer. When you reach the Desktop the dock will look different. Then give it about 5min and shutdown completely again. Then boot normally and turn those options ON.
Booting into Safe Mode clears system caches and performs other maintenance tasks. It can fix weird issues.

Check Notifications in System Preferences, locate Mail and there are options to show the batch icon for the Dock icon.
That might work, upgrading to Ventura does have a newer Mail version.
Thanks for your reply, James! Although I have had the badge option always enabled in system preferences (I am still in Monterey), unfortunately I can't see badges on Mail's dock icon when using the 'today' setting.
Thanks again James for taking the time to help. I have followed your instructions. Unfortunately the problem persists. Both of the other settings ('Inbox only' and 'All inboxes') work fine, but 'today' still shows no unread messages badge. I am thinking of updating to Ventura in the next few weeks; maybe that will help.
