Stage Manager Disappearing Act

Hi... I've been using Ventura 13.2.1 for awhile. I'm using Stage Manager, which I do like. No real issues EXCEPT, my screen clears out taking the stage manager icons and whatever I'm using on the screen and they disappear off to the side and to the top of the screen. Yes, it's easy to pull them back onto my screen, but it's annoying and happens at odd times. Question: In settings, did I click on something that makes this happen, or is it something inherent with Ventura? Is there some setting that would stop this from happening? Am I missing an update? Is it a bug? Any ideas? Tnx!

Hey there cloud-skimmer,

Check to see if this also occurs while in a new user account. This is just to narrow down if it may be some app or extension that may be causing this behavior: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Kind regards.

Hey there cloud-skimmer,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, we do want to make you aware that Stage Manager would only display the currently used app in the center of the screen, while other apps you're using appear as thumbnails on the side.

Also, there are a few ways you can cause windows or apps to be hidden or moved to the side of your display when using Stage Manager. For more details, check out the information from the following link below: Use Stage Manager to organize apps and windows on Mac - Apple Support

Thumbnails are arranged automatically based on recent use, with up to six thumbnails shown, depending on the size of your desktop. Each thumbnail shows a live view of its window, so you can see updates like incoming messages without switching to that window.

* To send a window to the side as a thumbnail without switching windows, click the minimize button  in the corner of the window. Or press Command-M.
* To hide an app's thumbnail and windows, press Command-H. When an app isn't visible because it's hidden or hasn't been used recently, you can switch to that app in other ways, such as from the Dock or by pressing Command-Tab.

If you want to have windows, desktop items, and apps visible at all times, you can change the Stage Manager settings to reflect this with the additional steps below:

Change Stage Manager settings
Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar, then click Customize next to Stage Manager on the right.

Recent applications
* When this setting is turned on, thumbnails remain visible, unless covered by a window.
* When this setting is turned off, thumbnails are hidden until you move your pointer to the left edge of the screen.

Desktop items
* When this setting is turned on, items on your desktop remain visible.
* When this setting is turned off, items on your desktop are hidden until you click your desktop.

Show windows from an application
* All at Once: The app in the center of the screen shows all of its windows at the same time.
* One at a Time: The app in the center of the screen shows one of its windows at a time. Its other windows are in the app's thumbnail. To switch between them, click the thumbnail. You can still drag windows from the thumbnail to the center to create a group.

Let us know if that's able to help.

Have a great day!

Hi Chris_V89...

Thank you for your reply. When I set up Stage Manager, I used the link you sent to set it up. I went through it again just now and experimented by turning off "all at once" and turned on "one at a time". Otherwise, I didn't see any other settings I had done wrong. I have used the drag feature when I need my calculator while doing banking. Works great. Changing my thumbnails works great. My issue is the timing of the apps and thumbnails not being visible, as in disappearing from my screen at odd times.

When an app isn't visible because it's hidden or hasn't been used recently Sometimes when I walk into the kitchen for a glass of water, for instance, when I come back (under 5 minutes), the app has disappeared into the top of my screen leaving a thin grey strip, which, when tapped, slides back onto my desktop. The thumbnails are gone, too, off to the left of the screen, but also return. It's easy enough to tap on the grey strip and everything is back.

However, yesterday I was in the middle of typing a sentence in an email and the app disappeared into the top of the screen. Okay, but doesn't follow that it "hasn't been used recently". I was in the process of using the app. I had not touched any command keys of any kind. And, interestingly, just now, while I PAUSED for a few seconds to think of the next thing to type, it did the same thing....app disappeared at the top of my screen. I find this odd. And annoying.

I did upgrade to 13.3 yesterday. I also called Apple Support and allowed them access to my screen while my app was conveniently in the act of disappearing, but when asked, was told nobody had called about this issue and the person seemed baffled. As am I. The tech person had me shut my computer down and reboot it. I knew that wouldn't help because I'd tried that, and it didn't help.

I'm puzzled because of the timing of the apps and thumbnails disappearing, especially doing it while I'm typing an email, for instance. (And it just did it again). Having it happen every few minutes while working on my computer is not working for me. :-( I'm calling gremlins.

Anyway, Chris_V89, thank you for giving it a shot. I do appreciate the time you took to read, copy, paste, and try to fix this issue. Hope you have a good day!

Hi Jeff_W., Alma1090, Chris_V89......

I gave the test run suggested by Alma1090 by using my husband's account (he never uses the iMac so there are very few apps that might interfere). I signed into my email, sent and received a test email, typing at least 6 lines. I also went to the kitchen, and at one point, was talking to my husband and the computer went to sleep. When I logged back in to his acct, the app I had left open was still open and visible.

Long way to say that, but I now suspect one of my apps is causing the problem. It will be "fun" figuring out which one. More testing to root out the evil app. ;-)

Thank you all for all the help! Have a great day!
