iMac g3 error

iMac g3 does not finish booting

Gives me the screen as shown in the picture and I go to restart it and I don’t get no splash screen just restarts and does the same thing

Just put 20gb hardrive in it and just installed Mac OS 8.5 and now the cd drive hums when I put a disc in probably just seated it wrong though

also there is no pram battery

From the photo, your G3 iMac looks like a 333 MHz model with a tray-loading CD-ROM drive. That iMac shipped with OS 8.6, so installing an older version like 8.5 can cause an unimplemented trap. During startup, the software is calling for a routine that's missing, because the software build isn't supported. You need to install the OS software using either the original iMac restore disk that shipped with that model or an Apple OS 9 or 9.1 retail disk having a universal installer. A retail disk with OS 8.6 would work, but it was produced for a very brief time and difficult to find now. That's why I'd suggest looking for OS 9 or 9.1.
