Prevent external monitor sleeping when laptop lid is closed

Hi,

I've got an intel based MacBook Pro running Ventura. It's attached to an external 27" monitor via a USB-C to DP adapter which seems to work fine. The external monitor is detected correctly and configures without any issues.

I've checked the relevant boxes to prevent sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.

And tried all the options that I've so far found on this subject but still, when I close the laptop lid, the external monitor screen goes black. Pressing buttons & moving the mouse has no effect. The external screen comes back on again when I open the laptop lid. The laptop does not go into sleep mode that I can tell.

This did used to work fine, however I was using a different monitor config and it was pre-ventura. I dont know if Ventura has changed the way this used to work, or if the monitor/adapter is having some problems. Maybe the lid being closed turns off signal to the usb-c ports or similar? (guessing here of course).

Any help appreciated.

Do you have the power cable plugged in? If not, it seems it will sleep no matter what.

But in the interest of battery preservation, I want to be able to use an external monitor when my MacBook lid is closed, even if I’m on battery power. Since the battery should not be sitting at 100% all the time (Apple recommends that you keep it between 20% and 80% to preserve battery), I want to be able to drain the battery a bit when I am working. Unfortunately, the only way I would be able to drain the juice would be to open the lid while I’m working, which is less than optimal for me.
