How can I manually set a specific Wi-Fi network to always be used in a specific location?
In the old days, macOS would allow us to prioritize Wi-Fi networks. However, someone decided we could no longer be trusted with that level of control over our own devices, so that option seems to have gone away. Why?
There are several places where I spend a lot of time (home, favorite coffee shops, co-work spaces) and I ALWAYS want to use a specific, local Wi-Fi network. However, most of the time iOS and macOS select xfinitywifi or some other network.
xfinitywifi, and its more secure sibling XFINITY, are ubiquitous in my area, and I do have to use them frequently in random public places. But, at home and other known/trusted locations, I never want to use xfinitywifi, yet macOS and iOS insist on grabbing onto that one. Eventually I notice that downloads are slow, or I can't print, and then I have to manually change networks.
This is made even more annoying since there is no widget that can display the name of my current Wi-Fi network. Every single time I enter a known location I have multiple taps to figure out whether I am in fact on the network I want.
Please tell someone to stop this madness and let us have some control back.
