video (.mov) changes to jpeg when uploading to desktop and YouTube

Can anyone help me work out why all of a sudden my videos (.MOV in photos) change to jpegs when I want to move them to desktop or upload to YouTube? TIA😀

Make a test, to see the format of your videos.

  • Select a video in Photos, then use the command "File > Export > Export unmodified original". and save it to your Movies folder.
  • Now try to open the exported video in QuickTime Player. Does it play? Also look at the Info for the video in the Finder with ⌘i. You can see the codecs in the section "More Info" in the Info panel. How is the video encoded? Is it HEVC or H.264 or AAC?


What is the source of your videos? How are you transferiing them to your Mac?
