macOS kernel panics after 13.3 update

I am experiencing several Kernel panics after installing the macOS Ventura 13.3 update. I have never had any crashes before this update with Ventura on my iMac. I have send the reports to Apple but have not made a snapshot of the crash report. I think it crashed on iokit. Is anybody else experiencing this as well?

Will assume the above is directed to me ?

There has been a suggestion put forth.

What is done with that information is up to the User ( Owner of the Question )

If that is not to their liking >>

Then have a few suggestions ;

1 - Get Support Choose a product and we’ll find you the best solution.Start now and open an Apple Support Ticket as they are Apple Employees to deal will these types of issues .

2 - Product Feedback - Apple and make it known to Apple regarding this ongoing issue

3 - Have the computer evaluated by the Professionals who have the Special Hardware Software and Expertise to diagnose the issue and offer possible solutions

As far as I know you can only prepare your internal disk or an external disk using recovery mode with the previous release (download an 13.2.1 installer or another earlier release first) and use Time Machine to restore your data. I have partitioned my internal disk with all user data separate from the OS and that makes life a bit easier. Unfortunately when I rebooted with 13.2.1 both mail and photos started to complain that their files (databases) were created with a newer macOS release and so for me there is no way back 😞. I used the recovery mode and use Disk Utility to verify my internal disk and found no issues. I also ran the macOS diagnostics to check the iMac (see Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support) itself and again found no issues. I seriously hope this get fixed very soon; this certainly puts a dent in my trust in Apple.

Btw I had another kernel panic this morning not sitting behind the Mac. So far since March 30 already 11 Kernel panics; almost once a day.

To rule out Software Issues as the cause of this issue >>

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

Here is the report (except the disk information)

What do you mean by "except the disk information"? That report seems to include the disk information. And it is very unusual.

The bottom line is that Apple tests these updates with standard configurations. Your machine if far, far from that.

The most interesting parts are disk6 and disk9. disk6 isn't showing complete information in your EtreCheck report. EtreCheck gets this disk information from the operating system, so that means the operating system doesn't have it either. This is the most likely cause. I recommend disconnecting that drive.

disk9 looks like something unusual. I've never seen a disk with that name. It may not be compatible. I recommend disconnecting that one too.

Otherwise, any external hardware has a possibility of causing these kinds of kernel panics. While those drives above appear to be the most likely, it could be any of them.

And you have a custom-designed partition of your internal Fusion drive. You can unplug the external drives easily enough. Fixing the Fusion would require a complete wipe and reinstall. If you can't identify the cause from one of the externals, that's your only option.

What follows is only 1 opinion and welcome additional ideas on the Best Remedial Actions are needed to put this computer Right.

Some of which have already occurred  from @etresoft Thx

Personally, I would Wipe the Drive Clean and Start Fresh with a New Installation.

Would suggest Only Migrating the User Account and nothing more.

Only install the Needed Applications directly from the Developers of from the Apple Apps Store

Then and only then, add back each External Drive one at a time and Test if the Crash occurs

Repeat this process until the Offending Drive can be clearly identified as the Root Cause of this issue

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Q -  Security updates disabled - Security updates are disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection

A - Not a good idea

Q -  Kernel panics - This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure.

A - With this many External Drive hanging off the back of this machine - difficult to determine which drive is the cause of the Panic

Q -  Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

A - Not a good idea

Q -   System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

A - Running with these number of Modification tend to have consequences including what is occurring presently

Configuration Files:

Q -   /etc/hosts - Count: 84 - Corrupt!

A - Self Explanatory

OS 13.3 is crashing Scrivener for Mac each time I touch one particular button...the "highlight" button. Everything else seems to be okay. I've restarted Scrivener several times...works fine until I hit the highlight button, then it crashes. It will save, etc. It's just the highlight button. I've rebooted my iMac, ran a utility test, and still crashes when the highlight button in Scrivener is pressed.

It is certainly not a hardware failure! I have booted from a 13.2.1 disk and no crashes whatsoever. Unfortunately there are 2 things that have been upgraded with 13.3 that are no longer working with 13.2.1; i.e. mail: the format requires a newer version of macOS and photos: The library “Photos Library” is from a newer version of Photos. So I am stuck with 13.3 which already gave me 8 Kernel panics in 4 days 😞 I hate this release. I hope Apple fixes this quickly!

yes same here

No. Each problem is different. Even if they exhibit the same outward signs like a kernel panic.

from the log it seems the issue is related to iokit?

However, when I say “different”, I mean at a low level. At a high level, these problems are the same - hardware failure. They both have the same solution. Take your computer to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service provider for additional diagnostics and repair.

I definitely have NO hardware issues. When I ran on every release prior to 13.3 I had never seen any kernel panic. I ran the apple diagnostic tool and it reported no problem. I didn’t change any hardware connected to my Mac after I updated. After the 13.3 update I booted from an external disk with 13.2.1 on it and had no kernel panics. It is caused by whatever is changed in 13.3!!

Your computer disagrees with you about that.

When I ran on every release prior to 13.3 I had never seen any kernel panic.

Then erase the hard drive, restore to an earlier version of the operating system, and never update it again. Problem solved.

I ran the apple diagnostic tool and it reported no problem.

So who are you going to believe? The diagnostic tool or kernel panics?

That's a fundamental problem with any diagnostic tool. If the tool's results disagree with an obvious physical, reality right in front of you, then the diagnostic tool is wrong.

Diagnostic tools don't work the way people think they do. If a diagnostic tool reports a problem, then you definitely have a problem. But if a diagnostic tool does not report a problem, then its results have little value. This is true for both Apple diagnostic tools or something like EtreCheck. A "clean check" may mean that 100 different, specific things are working properly. That reduces the number of potential failures to only 9,900.

If the computer is unusable, then it needs repair. Additional diagnostics may not produce any additional data. The only solution might be to simply replace the component that is responsible for 8,190 of those potential failures and hope it was one of those. I'm afraid that's as good as it gets.

I didn’t change any hardware connected to my Mac after I updated. After the 13.3 update I booted from an external disk with 13.2.1 on it and had no kernel panics. It is caused by whatever is changed in 13.3!!

So what is your plan for fixing 13.3? Sometimes people fall into a rabbit hole hoping that "the next update" fixes their problem. It rarely does. I recommend avoiding that temptation.

You have a heavily customized computer. Whatever problem you are experiencing is unique to your computer and only your computer. As difficult as it may be to solve for you, it will be infinitely easier for you to solve your problem than for all these "me too" folks to solve their completely different problems on their completely different computers. Apple sells these things in lots of a million. Anyone who starts off with "same here" is fundamentally, absolutely, wrong.

Luckily for you, your computer is an all-in-one model. You can simply unplug a cable and see if the panics stop. It's literally easy easy as that. If the panics stop, then you know the problem is somewhere along those cables that connect your external hard drives. If the panics don't stop, then the problem is inside the computer. You won't be able to fix it. Even if the problem is directly caused by a bug in Ventura 13.3, it doesn't matter in the least. You still can't fix it. But I'm getting ahead of myself...and way ahead of you. If you want to make any progress, you have to take that first step.
