MACBOOK PRO 2017 SHUTS DOWN ON DEDICATED GPU

DEVICE:

I have a Macbook pro-2017 (A1707) With a good specification of

  • 16GB of ram
  • with 4GB of Dedicated Gpu (Redeon pro 560)
  • and integrated GPU is (Intel HD Graphics 630 1536MB)

I am a video editor who uses editing software daily in my freelance work. I constantly edit on Adobe Premier Pro which I was also using in my windows before shifting to MAC OS.

But over the month, I am having an issue with my MacBook. Whenever I render my file on Dedicated Gpu, my MacBook suddenly turns off without any error and strat overheating for no reason. Video rendering is a heavy task but not every time.

then when the MacBooks cool down. It automatically turns on its own. and Later if I try again. It's done that again.

I just did something to know what exactly the problem is: I use Integrated GPU which is intel one, and everything was normal and safe without any error.

I can only work with Integrated GPU for life but It's not worth to buy MacBook for lot of bucks when you are an video editor who needs Dedicated GPU for sure.

Can anyone help me? I'll be very thankful;)

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

It sounds like your MacBook could be overheating when using the dedicated GPU during video rendering, which is causing it to shut down to prevent damage to the hardware. This can happen if the dedicated GPU is under heavy load for a prolonged period of time, and the MacBook's cooling system is not able to dissipate the heat generated by the GPU.

Here are a few things you can try to address this issue:

  1. Make sure your MacBook is running the latest version of macOS and that all updates are installed (so macOS is 13.3) OR on the macOS version that was a stable one. If you have Time Machine backup(-s) that were before the problem -- just make sure to safe&backup recent files somewhere else and then you may try Restore from Time Machine. This can help ensure that any known issues with the GPU or other hardware are addressed.
  2. Clean the vents and fans of your MacBook to remove any dust or debris that may be blocking airflow and causing the MacBook to overheat. You can use compressed air or a soft brush to clean the vents and fans. As well as to make sure that those are in tip-top shape.
  3. Try using a laptop cooling pad to help dissipate heat away from your MacBook. These cooling pads usually have fans that can help draw heat away from the laptop and prevent it from overheating.
  4. Reduce the load on the dedicated GPU by adjusting the settings in Adobe Premiere Pro. You can try reducing the resolution, bit rate, or other settings to reduce the load on the GPU and prevent overheating.
  5. Consider using an external GPU (eGPU) (sure thing if possible). An eGPU can help take the load off your MacBook's internal GPU and allow for smoother video rendering without causing overheating issues.
