I have a 2009 Mac book pro running el capitan. I am try to update to later versions of macOS but i can't find an option to do the software update anywhere

I have a 2009 mac book pro running el capitan 10.11.6. How can I upgrade to later MacOS so I can get app updates as well.

Your computer can't be upgraded past El Capitan.
