salt water and AirPods Pro

Is it okay to wear AirPods Pro while swimming in the open water? I’m going to the beach and I’d listen to some music while I swim in the sea but I have doubts about the AirPods water resistance.

Thanks for reaching out SunflowerSummer,

It sounds like you are wanting to know if it is safe to use your AirPods Pro while swimming. We can help.

First, check out this information About the sweat and water resistance of AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation):

AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) aren't designed for use in water sports like swimming, or for showering. After workouts, heavy sweating, or water splashes and before putting AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) into the charging case, wipe down your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

The article also goes on to say the following:

Keep your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) safe

Sweat and water resistance aren’t permanent conditions. They might diminish over time. AirPods Pro, AirPods (3rd generation), the MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation), the Lightning Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation), and the MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods Pro (2nd generation) can't be rechecked or resealed for sweat and water resistance.
Follow these tips to avoid damage to your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation):
* Don't place your AirPods under running water, such as a shower or faucet.
* Don't swim with or otherwise submerge your AirPods.
* Don't put AirPods in the washing machine or dryer.
* Don't wear AirPods in a sauna or steam room.
* Don't expose AirPods to high-velocity water, such as while water skiing.
* Avoid dropping AirPods or subjecting them to other impacts.
If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to liquid through any of the scenarios above:
* Wipe them clean with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
* Allow them to completely dry before using them or placing them in the charging case.
Don't expose AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, sunscreen, oil, or hair dye. All of these can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes. If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to any of these:
* Wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water and dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
* Allow them to completely dry before using them or placing them in the charging case.

Hope that helps.

Take care.

Additional to the great advice from AdvisorMP, I think several issues would cause disappointing results while swimming;

  • The AirPods use Bluetooth, which has limited range from the host device. You probably don't want your iPhone too near sea water.
  • Bluetooth is a UHF radio signal and has very little ability to pass through water, so you would probably get frequent drop-outs.
  • The AirPods would be an untethered device potentially in deep water, there is a real risk one might drop Fromm your ear and never be seen again.
