What if the XL still isn't large enough to create a complete seal?
None of the supplied ear tips create a complete seal so the sound sounds awful.

Apple tried to provide a number of ear tips, but not everyone's ears are the same. As such, you may find getting a 3rd-party set of ear tips your best option.
