Before donating or selling your Mac, it's important to securely erase all personal data to protect your privacy. Follow the steps below to reset your Mac and clean it before donating or selling:
1. Backup your data: Before erasing everything, make sure to back up any important files or data that you want to keep. You can use Time Machine to backup your files to an external drive.
2. Sign out of everything: Sign out of all Apple services, such as iCloud, iMessage, iTunes, and the App Store. Go to System Preferences, select Apple ID, and sign out.
3. Deauthorize your computer: If you've used your Mac to play DRM-protected media, such as movies or music, you'll need to deauthorize it. Open iTunes, go to Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
4. Erase your hard drive: Once you've backed up your data and signed out of everything, it's time to erase your hard drive. You can use 3rd party data eraser tool such as BitRaser File Eraser, that will help you erase the data from the drive, beyond the scope of any recovery.
5. In Recovery Mode, select Disk Utility, and then select your Mac's hard drive. Click Erase, and choose a format (such as Mac OS Extended or APFS) for the new disk.
6. Reinstall macOS: After erasing your hard drive, go back to the main menu in Recovery Mode and select Reinstall macOS. Follow the prompts to reinstall the operating system.
7. Set up your Mac: Once you've reinstalled macOS, you can set up your Mac as if it were new. Create a new user account, and go through the setup process.
By following these steps, you'll be able to securely erase your personal data and give your Mac a fresh start before donating or selling it.
