Magic Keyboard with Touch ID works at first and then stops

I purchased a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for my wife to use her Mac Mini (silicone chip). We set up her fingerprints and they work for the first few days and then stop. There is no response for any of the registered fingers. We do the setup all over again and the same thing happens. Four setups so far.

OS 13.2.1 - Safari 16.3 in use.

Hey there markgilbo,

We'd like to help by ruling out some possible causes, along with learning more about what's happening:

  1. You mentioned that it does work, but that there's an issue that occurs with it 'stopping' until your wife registers new fingerprints. What exactly occurs when you experience this issue with it 'stopping'? In other words, does anything show when she tries using Touch ID when the issue occurs, or does it act as if she hasn't put her finger on the Touch ID key on the Magic Keyboard she uses?
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  3. You mentioned that macOS 13.2.1 is installed, but the latest version is macOS 13.3. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.
  4. Does the same issue occur if you test the keyboard with a different Mac that supports Touch ID?

Cheers!

Thanks for reaching out Bruno75,

1) What occurs is, she wipes out the old prints and we register new ones (I add one for myself as well). The TouchID works initially but after 3-4 days, her touch is rejected for both registered fingers. However, mine continues to work and log in.

2) Shut downs and restarts have been tried with no effect. She shuts down every evening anyway.

3) Installed 13.3 and existing touch still rejected. Created new prints today and they work. Also cleaned the sensor, just to be sure. Now we wait.

4) Have registered her print on my Macbook Pro (all software up to date). Cleaned sensor as well. TouchID works so we give it time as in #3

Will let you know what happens and thanks again for the advise. ...Mark
