Two-factor authentication helps protect your Apple ID account and helps prevent any unauthorized use of it. You should want it, as much as Apple wants users to have it.

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication - Apple Support

You should receive the verification code on one of your Apple devices (pop-up notification), or else on a trusted phone number (text message), as you have linked to the account. You can manage the trusted devices and trusted phone numbers on the account management site. I think there’s a 14 day evaluation period, after which TFA is permanent.
