How do I backup an external, bootable, ssd drive using time machine? I cannot tell if I am backing up the internal HDD or the bootable external SDD. Thanks in advance.

If you open the TM drive and look at what's on there you'll see each of the drives that are being backed up by Time Machine:

If you find your external drive is not being backed up add it to the exclusion section of the System/Time Machine/Options settings pane and then remove it and start a new backup.

But you shouldn't have to to that. It should automatically be backed up.
