Help with Display Setup and waking the Mac

Hoping to get some assistance with my display setup.

I'm using the Brydge 16" vertical MacBook dock, which has x2 USB-C outs. One of these is going to a separate Henge Dock with has a ton of outputs; namely, a mini-display (using a Mini Display > Displayport cable) and a USB-C (using a USB-C > HDMI cable). These are each connected to an external ASUS monitor.

Once everything is on, it works great, and the displays look wonderful. But there are 2 issues that keep bugging me.

  1. The wallpapers do not stay once I restart the Mac. I suppose this isn't only due to the external display connections, but when restarting my MacBook on its own without having connected at all, the wallpaper I choose does remain. But restarting while it's docked or any combination of docked/undocked throughout the day, the wallpaper goes to default. Annoying.
  2. But the real problem is keeping the Mac "awake" in the time it takes to close the lid, dock it, and connect to the external displays. It takes some time to wake up the bluetooth magic keyboard/trackpad, and sometimes, it doesn't connect to the displays immediately. Often I'll have to undock it, open the clamshell, log in, and then close it and re-dock it to get it to connect.

I installed an app called Amphetamine to keep the Mac awake always, even when closing the clamshell (I used to use Insomniac once upon a time). Funnily enough, it works when I'm undocked and going from open to closed with the MacBook only. But if I close it and then dock it immediately, about 50% of the time it will "sleep" and revert to the login screen.

It just doesn't seem consistent. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
