Damesel in Distress!! What happens if I delete one of these volumes?

Hi guys,

I tried to install a game earlier and I got a message saying I was out of storage... I checked and I appear to have two volumes (see screenshot) Is there a way of deleting one safely, preferably without losing anything important?

Select the bottom - Data volume. Notice it is not indented under Macintosh HD volumes, but at the same level. There is also a Macintosh HD - Data volume in the volume group for Macintosh HD. That is the current Data volume. If you select it, there will be a home icon badge on the icon. The other will not have that badge.

The bottom one is a duplicate from when you reinstalled the OS, but didn't remove that volume.

You should have a Data Volume, but you should only see it in Disk Utility.

That one you see may be an orphan and can possibly be deleted.

Open Disk Utility and choose Show All Devices from the View Popup menu.

You should see a Volume Group with Macintosh HD, a snapshot, and a - Data volume.

If you see another - Data volume below that, select it and look at the Mount Point in the info window. If it is mounted at /Volumes, then it is an orphan. You can remove it by selecting and clicking the Remove Volume button (–).

I have never heard of an orphan having files that didn’t get transferred to the tru Data Volume, but you may want to check before removing it.
