my broadband provider is stopping email provision so set up gmail account. Get message "Unable to verify account name or password" How do I get over this. Tried changing from imap to pop. TIA

You want IMAP, but new security is crimping Apple's ancient Mil App.
Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…
It just needs an App Password separate from the gMail password…

In a Browser logn to gmail.com, do the test eMails show there?

Thanks BDAqua got gmail account into Mail successfully. Next snag is I can only send email if I use a different server (still have email address from broadband supplier). It seems that test mail sent to gmail account has disappeared into ether. any ideas to solve this.
for some reason I can't access that bit. Just get TLS certificate None and no options to change except allow insecure authentication and setting up account in Mail, retried several times, always comes up with can't verify
I have 2 step verification on, emails show that both back up email address and phone no added but bar at top of account goes on telling me to add either one or other. I hadn't put app password in - forgot about it until your last. I don't get the option!! and getting texts to my mobile is a nightmare (not a smartphone) and it doesn't work unless I hold phone at or outside upstairs window. Joy of rural life! V grateful for your efforts to help a technophobe
